چکیده

background ischemic injury of the spinal cord during the surgical repair of thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysms might lead to paraplegia. although a number of different mechanisms have been proposed, the exact cause of paraplegia has remained unknown, hampering the development of effective pharmacologic or other strategies for prevention of this condition. a number of studies suggested that cyclooxygenases (cox) contribute to neural breakdown; thus, cox inhibitors might reduce injury. results pretreatment with 100 µg of paracetamol resulted in a significant improvement in motor functions and histopathologic findings (p < 0.05). despite a higher rate of survival in 100 µg of paracetamol group (70%) at day 28, the difference was not statistically significant in comparison with controls. conclusions our results suggest a protective effect of pretreatment with it paracetamol on ischemic spinal cord injury during thoracolumbar aortic aneurysm surgery. objectives we aimed to assess the preventive effect of intrathecal (it) pretreatment with paracetamol on spinal cord injury in a rat model. materials and methods this experimental study was performed in ataturk university animal research laboratory center, erzurum, turkey. adult male wistar rats were randomly allocated to three experimental groups (n = 6) to receive it physiologic saline (controls), 50 µg of paracetamol, or 100 µg paracetamol one hour before induction of spinal cord ischemia. six other rats were considered as the sham group. for the assessment of ischemic injury, motor functions of the hind limbs and histopathologic changes of the lumbar spinal cord were evaluated. additional 20 rats were divided into two equal groups for the second part of the study where the survival rates were recorded in controls and in animals receiving 100 µg of paracetamol during the 28-day observation period.

Protective Effect of Catechin Hydrate on Spinal Cord Ischemia-reperfusion Injury in Rats

Background: Aortic artery stenosis leads to Ischemia-Reperfusion (I-R) injury, which can cause certain clinical expressions, such as paraplegia. Objectives: To appraise the effect of Catechin Hydrate (CH) against spinal cord I-R injury. Materials & Methods: A total of 35 male rats (250-300 g) were divided randomly into five groups:  intact, sham surgery, dimethyl sulfoxide (I-R+DMSO), low-dos...

Protective effect of lutein on spinal cord ischemia-reperfusion injury in rats

Objective(s): Paraplegia is deterioration in motor or sensory function of the lower limbs that can occur after modification of a thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysm. The purpose of this survey was to determine the protective action of lutein on spinal cord ischemia-reperfusion (I-R) damage. Materials and Methods: Thirty-five male rats were distributed into five groups: intact, sham, dimethyl sulfo...

Protective effect of Crocus sativus L. (Saffron) extract on spinal cord ischemia-reperfusion injury in rats

Objective(s): Ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury of spinal cord is leading to the paraplegia observed. In this study, we investigated the protective effect of the saffron extract on spinal cord I/R injury. Materials and Methods: Thirty five male Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into 5 groups: intact, sham surgery, normal saline (NS), low dose saffron aqua extract, high dose saffron aqua extract....

Effect of coenzyme Q10 on neuropathic pain threshold resulting from spinal cord injury in male rats

Introduction: Coenzyme Q10 is a powerful antioxidant that has the ability to reduce the damage caused by oxidative stress and is predominantly found in the inner mitochondrial membrane. This study was conducted to determine the effect of coenzyme Q10 on neuropathic pain in an animal model of spinal cord injury. Methods: In order to induce neuropathic pain, thoracic segments of the spinal cor...
